How to Find the Right Photographer for Your Graduation Portraits

Choosing a photographer for your graduation session is a big deal, and Joseph at BanaKin Photos walks you through exactly what to look for.

This Milestone Deserves the Right Person Behind the Camera

Graduation is one of those moments you only get once. Whether you're finishing high school, walking across a college stage, or completing a graduate program, this is a real accomplishment. You worked hard to get here. The photos you take should actually reflect that.

I've photographed a lot of graduates here in the DMV area, and one thing I hear all the time is, "I just didn't know what to look for." So let me share what I think actually matters.

Look at Their Portfolio With Fresh Eyes

The first thing you want to do is look at a photographer's past work. Not just a highlight reel, but a good chunk of it. Are the images consistent? Does the lighting look intentional? Are the people in the photos actually relaxed, or do they look stiff and uncomfortable?

For graduation portraits specifically, you want to see how the photographer handles different skin tones, different body types, and different environments. A good photographer should be able to make you look amazing whether you're shooting outdoors in a Maryland park in the fall or inside a studio space. If their portfolio only shows one type of person or one type of setting, that's worth paying attention to.

Don't Skip the Vibe Check

I'm serious about this one. The way you feel around your photographer matters more than most people realize. If you're nervous or uncomfortable, that shows up in every single photo. A great photographer doesn't just know how to use a camera. They know how to make you feel at ease before they ever pick it up.

Read reviews. Look at how they respond to comments and messages online. If you can, have a quick conversation with them before you book. You should feel like this is someone who actually cares about your experience, not just someone filling a time slot.

Here in Temple Hills and around the broader DMV, there are a lot of photographers to choose from. That's a good thing. It means you have options. But it also means not every photographer is the right fit for every person. Trust your gut on the energy.

Ask About the Experience, Not Just the Price

Pricing matters, absolutely. But the cheapest option isn't always the best value, and the most expensive option isn't automatically better. What you really want to understand is what the session actually looks like from start to finish.

How long is the session? Do they help you plan your outfits or choose a location? What does the delivery process look like, and how long does it take to get your images? These details tell you a lot about how much a photographer has thought through the experience they're creating for you.

I always encourage graduates to think about this like a collaboration. You bring your personality, your outfits, your ideas. The photographer brings the skill, the light, the direction, and the eye. When both sides are invested, that's when you get photos that actually feel like you.

Location and Season Matter More Than You Think

Maryland has some beautiful spots for outdoor portraits, and the seasons here genuinely change the look and feel of a session. A late summer session has a completely different energy than a crisp November shoot. If you're a December graduate, don't be afraid of the cold. That season has a mood to it that photographs beautifully.

Ask your photographer if they have go-to locations they love to shoot, or if they're open to scouting a spot that's meaningful to you. The right environment can take a portrait from good to something you'll actually want to hang on a wall.

Make Sure They Know How to Photograph You

This feels obvious, but it's worth saying directly. Your photographer should have experience and confidence working with your skin tone and your style. You shouldn't have to walk away from a session hoping the photos came out okay. You should walk away knowing they did.

Look closely at the editing style in a photographer's portfolio. Does it feel natural? Does the skin look like skin? These are questions that matter, and a good photographer won't be offended when you ask them.

A Simple Way to Start

If you've been going back and forth trying to figure out who to book, I'd love to be part of the conversation. At BanaKin Photos, I work with graduates all year long right here in the DMV, and every session is personal to me. This is your moment, and I want to help you capture it in a way that actually feels like you.
